Are there any side effects of melatonin?
Melatonin is an endogenous substance that acts through the regulation of the endocrine system and has its own metabolic pathway in the body. 70% to 75% of the melatonin in the blood is metabolized by the liver into the form of 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate, and then excreted in urine (80%) and feces (20%); another 5% to 7% is converted into The 6-hydroxymelatonin glucuronide form does not cause the accumulation of metabolites in the body; and its biological half-life is short, and it drops to the physiological level of normal people after 7-8 hours of oral administration, so its toxicity is extremely small.
Jack's (1967) study showed that a soluble dose of 800 mg/kg BW of melatonin did not cause death in mice. Fu Jianyun et al. (1997) conducted acute toxicity test and mutagenicity test on melatonin in rats and mice, and the results showed that oral LD50 of rats and mice were both greater than 10 g/kg BW, Ames test, mouse bone marrow cell micronucleus test and Sperm deformity tests in mice are all negative; more than 3,000 human taking tests have shown that taking up to a few grams per day (thousands of times the dose to maintain a healthy dose) for up to a month, no or almost no toxicity.
